Healthy food habits for Piles Patients

Piles are also known as haemorrhoids are kind of lumps which are found inside and around the anal region. It occurs as the veins around the anus or lower rectal region become swollen and inflamed. There are several factors that may be risk factors for developing piles such as chronic constipation and straining to pass stools.

There are several risk factors which may be the reason for developing piles:

  • Chronic constipation or diarrhoea
  • Straining while passing stools
  • Diet lacking in fibre or containing low amounts of fibre
  • Being pregnant
  • Being older than 50 years
  • Lifting heavy articles frequently

Low-fibre foods to avoid include:

  • Dairy products. This category includes milk, cheese, and other varieties.
  • Products made from refined flour include white breads, pasta, and bagels.
  • Red meat. It might cause constipation and can lead to digestion issues as it is high in saturated fats.
  • Processed meats. These foods, such as bologna and other cold cuts, are found to be low in fibre and high in sodium, increasing the risk of constipation.
  • Fried foods. These can be hard on your digestive tract and also difficult to digest.
  • Salty foods. They may cause bloating and make your haemorrhoids more sensitive.

One should also avoid:

  • Spicy foods. While not necessarily low in fibre, spicy food can increase pain and increases the discomfort associated with haemorrhoids.
  • Caffeinated beverages. These beverages, especially coffee, may harden your stools and make it more painful to use the toilets.
  • Alcohol. Like caffeinated beverages, alcoholic drinks can also dry up the stools and exacerbate the discomfort of piles and even cause bleeding

Lifestyle changes to be made to prevent and treat piles

  • A Healthy diet containing sufficient dietary fibre
  • A regular exercise routine
  • Improving upon anal hygiene
  • Avoiding sitting for long periods of time in the toilet (Avoid reading in the toilet)
  • Avoiding supplements and medicines that can cause dehydration and constipation or even diarrhea proves to be helpful.

Foods which help in managing piles

Diet should include sufficient amounts of dietary fibre.

Taking plenty of water and liquids

Decreased fat content both saturated and unsaturated overall.

Including plenty of fruits and vegetables, especially seasonal ones. Whole grains prove to be very beneficial for piles as they contain fiber that helps easy movement of stools.

Including a good amount of fibre is an effective way to treat symptomatic haemorrhoids and it was observed that there was overall symptom improvement and including bleeding.

A review of literature states that higher dietary fibre intake reduces gastrointestinal disorders including constipation, and haemorrhoids.

Dietary fibre is helpful in adding bulk to the stools and makes it soft because it absorbs water. When the stools pass smoothly the risk of piles reduces.

Food items like whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits are loaded with fibre. Eating more of these items may help keep you regular and ward off constipation — and therefore in preventing piles.
