How to start your day, if you suffering from Hypertension

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is persistently increased with a systolic blood pressure( indicating the amount of blood exerting against artery walls when the heart is beating) of 130 to 139 mm Hg or a diastolic blood pressure( indicating the blood exerting in the artery walls while the heart is resting between the beats) of 80 to 89 mm Hg or higher.

High blood pressure is often called a silent killer because it doesn’t always show symptoms. One can have it for years and not know. But it is one of the major causes for strokes and heart attacks or kidney damage.

Few lifestyle changes that can be made if you are suffering from hypertension-

  • LOSING WEIGHT- Blood pressure often increases as weight increases. Overweight can lead to a condition of sleep apnea which in turn again increases your blood test. having too much weight around your waistline can also put you at greater risk of high blood pressure.

  • REGULAR EXERCISE- If you have elevated blood pressure, exercise can help you avoid developing hypertension, regular walks of 30 min a day can lower your blood pressure by about 5 to 8 mm of hg.

  • SODIUM REDUCING DIET PLANS- Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products helps keep the blood pressure in control and also reduce or cut back the amount of sodium in your diet. According to Ayurveda also people with hypertension should avoid salt, fatty and fried foods, or hot-spicy food – all of which are known to aggravate the condition. Drink an adequate amount of water in specified intervals. Include more greens in the diet. Consume more of carrots, flaxseeds, tomatoes, drumsticks, pomegranates, sesame, wheat bran and ginger, beetroot, red cabbage, watermelon and apple

  • SAY NO TO ALCOHOL-SMOKING-CAFFEINE-  Drinking more than moderate amounts of alcohol can actually raise blood pressure by several points, so reducing the intake of alcohol and smoking can help your blood pressure return to normal.

  • REDUCE STRESS AND TAKE PROPER SLEEP- stress and lack of sleep contributes to high blood pressure, try and eliminate the causes from your routine and practice regular breathing exercises or do regular meditation that can control your anger, stress & depression. This reduces the adrenal influx into the blood, thus maintaining blood pressure.

  • YOGA HERBS AND HYPERTENSION- Certain yoga asanas that can help you beat hypertension are Pranayam, Shavasan, Anulom-vilomma, Mayurasan, Shirshasan, Veerbhadrasan, Bhujangasana, and Vajrasana. Blood purifying herbs like ginger, garlic, cinnamon, Basil, etc. are highly effective in preventing hypertension.
