5 Common Habits that are Harmful to Your Health, According to Ayurveda

In order to follow a healthy lifestyle and good life, Ayurveda suggests a specific daily routine for each and every individual.

Following proper dinacharya helps in maintaining a good and healthy life by preventing us from various diseases, and promoting a good life and well-being. It helps us in prolonging our life.

An unhealthy lifestyle can lead to various health issues like acidity, gastritis, ulcers, indigestion and so on.

There are many common habits which we follow in our routine life but according to our Vedas, that may be wrong. So here are some of our wrong habits which we usually follow in our day to day life and by avoiding these habit we can prevent ourselves from various diseases.

  1. No concentration while eating: In Ayurveda, it is specified that you must have total devotion towards food while eating. There should be a complete big no to watching TV and chit chatting while eating as it disturbs the action of our body energies – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. So it is advised to have the meal only when you are hungry and concentrate on food while you are eating.
  2. No oiling of the body: Today a lot of people are using various branded creams but going naturally with the herbs helps more than the branded creams. Just as the machine needs oiling for the proper functioning, our body also needs oil for the lubrication of the various body parts such as knees, joints and bones. As diabetes is Kapha aggravation disease taking sesame oil or mustard oil and massaging twice or thrice a week is recommended. One can also mix and heat coconut, castor, sesame and olive oils together. Cool them and preserve in a bottle. Massage your entire body with the mixed oil. After allowing the oil to soak into the skin, wash it off using besan.
  3. Avoiding Nature’s Call: Ayurveda believes in obeying nature. Natural urges like passing stools, urine, sneeze, sleep, hunger, vomiting, cough should not be controlled frequently as they lead to various health issues. Tackle them as soon as you want to feel the urge.
  4. Not Having proper Sleep: Sleep when you feel sleepy and try to maintain a regular bedtime. The duration of sleep varies person to person depending on mental and physical exertion. If you feel fresh and energetic when wake up that is an indication of good health.
  5. Not doing enough physical activity: Without regular exercise, the body won’t function properly. Without physical movement the elasticity of tissue cells diminishes, muscles waste away, bones become fragile and the heart becomes weak. This increases one’s risk for developing osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and being overweight or obese.

By inculcating the good habits like eating on time, eating a balanced diet, adhering to nature’s call, taking proper rest and sleep and keeping yourself physically active can go a long way to keep you healthy and fit.
