Hing ( Asafoetida) is a spice with a unique flavour. This is dried resin native to India, Iran, and Afghanistan. It is the dried gum exuded from the rhizome or root of Ferula. You may not like its odour but it is very good for your digestion and appetite. Just a pinch of this amazing spice sauteed in ghee and added to your curry can do wonders in enhancing the flavor and the taste. From ancient times hing has been widely used in Indian cooking and ayurvedic medicines for digestion issues due to its therapeutic benefits.

  • Hot potency
  • It has Sharp, light, oily, dry and penetrating qualities.
  • Effect on doshas: best suited for balancing Kapha and Vata Dosha but may aggravate pitta dosha
  • Hing is rich in calcium, phosphorus, iron, carotene and niacin
  • Action on the body: aphrodisiac, analgesic, anthelmintic, anti-spasmodic, anti-tumour, anti-parasitic, bronchodilator, cardiac tonic, carminative, cardiac tonic, digestive, expectorant, induces ovulation, improves vision, vermifuge, and stimulant.

  • It should only be used in kapha and Vata dosha aggravation.
  • Hing should not be used during pregnancy as it is abortifacient.
  • One should stop taking Hing after conceiving during lactation.
  • Should be avoided during the menstrual cycle as it may increase the flow.
  • Should not be taken in in bleeding disorder as it is a blood thinner.
  • Avoid if someone has high blood pressure.
