When the digestive ability of the body, or Agni or fire element, is strong, the body creates healthy tissues, eliminate waste products efficiently, and produce a subtle essence called ojas. Digestion is a very important process for breaking down food into nutrients, which the body uses for energy, growth, and cell repair. Some of the common digestive problems include Heartburn/GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), and IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Symptoms may include bloating, diarrhoea, gas, stomach pain, and stomach cramps.

- Sip on ginger tea with meals: Ginger stimulates the digestion by speeding up the movement of food from the stomach into the small intestine, and helps eliminates digestive discomfort after eating. The phenolic compounds, primarily gingerol and shogaol, and various other volatile oils that are present in ginger help relax the smooth muscle of the intestine. It also stimulates saliva, bile, and gastric enzymes to aid in the digestion of the food that has been ingested. Sipping on ginger tea can be a healthy habit for the digestion.
- Triphala: Triphala, a traditional Ayurvedic formula is made up of a mixture of three fruits namely Amalaki, Haritaki, and Bibhitaki, and balances Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. It is known for its ability to gently cleanse and detoxify the digestive tract while replenishing, nourishing, and rejuvenating the tissues. About half an hour before bed, one should take ½ teaspoon Triphala powder with a cup of freshly boiled water.
- Aloe vera: This very herb helps to naturally cure heartburn and acidity. Consuming 2 tablespoons of aloe vera with a pinch of baking soda will give an immediate soothing sensation.
- Eat the biggest meal at lunch: There’s an Ayurvedic principle “when the sun is at its highest point of the day, the digestion process or the fire element is strongest”. So one should eat the biggest meal at lunch, giving the body plenty of time to fully digest before going to bed, which is when the digestive system effectively shuts down.
- Lime Juice: Lime is a cooling food that also improves digestive function by stimulating microcirculation. Mix 10-12 drops of lime juice and ¼ teaspoon baking soda (add this last) in 1 cup of water. Use cool water when feeling bloated or acidic whereas use warm water for indigestion problem.
- Pranayam: Just as fire is fed by fresh air, Agni, the fire element is kindled when we breathe deeply and relax our bodies. One can refresh the deep tissues with a few minutes of pranayama.
