Functional Medicine: New system of medicine to maximise Healthspan and minimise costs

James Maskell, who finds himself at the Intersection of functional medicine & community medicine, talks about how a new system of medicine is needed to face the changing face of diseases and mortality.

The types of diseases we see today are drastically different from the major causes of mortality a decade or two ago. Trauma, accidents, and infections were the leading issues that were driving the development of medicine earlier.

But now, there is a paradigm shift in terms of the leading medical issues where lifestyle-related disorders like Type-2 Diabetes, Heart disease, and auto-immune diseases are the primary reasons for mortality. The drug-based solution which worked well with infections, trauma, etc. is a mismatch for the burgeoning cases of lifestyle-related diseases, and the patients have started intuiting this mismatch and looking for something different.

What is needed for Chronic diseases is more generalism because the diseases’ effect is not limited to a specific organ but will be across functional systems, and here functional medicine is more relevant. With lifestyle-related disorders, the need is root cause resolution and a self-sufficient system, and this is where the current systems are at fault with the symptom suppression and the prolonged drug-dependent treatment.

Ultimately, James Maskell believes that this new system of medicine will help in maximizing Healthspan (the product of lifespan and quality of life) and minimize costs.
