A condition that impairs the body’s ability to process the blood sugars or blood glucose, we call it Diabetes. As Blood glucose is the main source of energy and comes from the food we eat, Without ongoing Proper management, diabetes can lead to worse symptoms, which in turn can increase the risk of dangerous complications, including stroke and heart diseases. Not all forms of diabetes arise from a person being overweight or leading an inactive lifestyle but are seen since childhood.

Types of Diabetes:

  • Type -1 Diabetes (Insulin Dependent ): It can occur at any age but most commonly occurs in children and adolescents thus also called juvenile diabetes. It usually occurs when the body fails to produce insulin and it is necessary to take artificial insulin regularly.
  • Type – 2 Diabetes (Non- Insulin Dependent ): It is more common in adults, where the cells in the body are unable to make proper use of the insulin produced by the body.  The cornerstone of type 2 diabetes is a healthy lifestyle including good physical activity and dietary modifications.
  • Gestational Diabetes: It occurs in some women during the phase of pregnancy where the body becomes less sensitive to insulin and gets resolved usually after giving birth.


People with diabetes have been seen at an increased risk of developing a number of serious health problems such as Cardiovascular diseases, Kidney failure, and blindness. It is important to maintain blood glucose levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol at or close to normal which can help delay or prevent diabetes complications. Therefore people with diabetes need regular monitoring.

Prevention and Management 

A good balance in life in the aspects of body & mental fitness and a healthy and balanced diet are paramount in achieving optimum blood sugar levels. Now that we have learned about diabetes, its complications and causes, it is also important to know the management of the disease and avoid the outgrowing of the same. Diet and Lifestyle

The ayurvedic dietary changes are meant to reduce glucose absorption and stimulate insulin production, which also aids in improving and maintaining the health of any diabetic patient.  It is recommended to take fresh fruits and vegetables, bitter herbs while avoiding loads of carbohydrates and dairy products. Exercise should be an important part of the regime on a long term basis. Apart from these few steps one can practice to  embrace a healthy lifestyle and dietary tips include :

  1. Eating a Diet High in fresh and nutritious food including whole grains, vegetables, low-fat dairy, healthy fat sources, Avoiding empty calories, maintaining a 30 min workout regime should be practiced on a daily basis.
  2. Maintaining a normal BMI (Body Mass Index).

Ayurvedic and  Natural Home Remedies 

Ayurveda, a natural form, should be taken up not only as a routine but as a  way of life to prevent, treat disease and enhance its longevity. Meditation, body relaxation techniques like massage, Yoga and herbal additions are few natural and ayurvedic forms of treatment.The meditation and relaxation techniques help to balance the three life forces (doshas). Vatta, Pitta, and Kapha that relate directly to the elements of nature and bodily functions.   1. Paneer Doda: 3-4 Overnight Soaked flowers of paneer Doda in a glass of water and consuming warm in the morning empty stomach can be effective in diabetes.
  2. Bitter Gourd (Karela): It can be consumed in capsule or juice form. 2 capsules or 10 ml juice in warm water empty stomach works well.
  3. Fenugreek (Methi Dana ): Drinking methi dana water empty stomach early morning on a regular basis helps to maintain the sugar levels. (You need to soak 1 tsp of methi dana seeds in 1 glass water overnight, strain it, warm and consume).
  4. Jamun: 10 ml Jamun juice consumed regularly helps to maintain blood sugar levels.
  5. Neem: Neem again can be consumed in a capsule form due to its bitter taste. 2 capsules early in the morning empty stomach needs to be taken on a daily basis.
  6. Gurmar: 1 tsp of gurmar powder can be consumed with warm water after breakfast and dinner regularly.
  7. Turmeric: Turmeric being an antioxidant helps to increase insulin sensitivity and lowering the blood sugars, 2 turmeric Capsules (turmeric formula) after breakfast or 1 glass of warm milk with turmeric boiled in it works wonders.
  8. Aloe Vera and Amla:  A traditional remedy that helps to keep steady sugar levels and prevents spike after meals. Aloe Vera juice and amla juice (10ml each ) in 1 glass of warm water empty stomach early morning can be taken.
