Winter comes with infections like cold, flu, cough. And Chyawanprash is no doubt a tested Ayurvedic formulation of herbs that help in building immunity, thereby protecting us from many bacterial and viral infections. It is believed that ‘Chyawan’ was the name of the sage for whom this Ayurvedic formula was prepared to restore his youth and vitality, while ‘Prash’ translates literally to ‘specially prepared food’. This formula can be consumed by just about anyone to benefit from its many healthy properties.

Here is the recipe of homemade Chyawanprash:


  • 750 gm Indian Gooseberry
  • 100 ml Organic Honey
  • 250 gm Homemade Clarified Butter
  • 75ml Sesame Oil
  • 100 g Sugar

The below-given ingredients should be used in the powdered form:

  • Cardamom: 25 gm
  • Triphala: 12 gm
  • Gulvel Satva (Guduchi Satva): 12 gm
  • Vanshlochan: 12 gm
  • Sandalwood:10 gm
  • Long Pepper:10 gm
  • Ginger, dry: 10 gm
  • Dashmool: 5 gm
  • Bay leaves: 5 gm
  • Nutmeg: 5 gm
  • Cloves: 5 gm
  • Chinese Cinnamon: 5 gm
  • Pepper: 5 gm
  • Prawal bhasma: 2.5 gm
  • Mrigashira Bhasma: 2.5 gm
  • Nagkesar (Cobra’s Saffron or Indian Rose Chestnut): 2.5 gm


  1. Mix all the powders in a glass bowl and set aside.
  2. Wash the Indian Gooseberry and pat it dry completely.
  3. Prick them with a fork.
  4. Pressure cook them in water till 2 whistles.
  5. De-seed them and prepare a very smooth paste in a grinder. Set aside.
  6. In a heavy bottomed pan / non-stick pan add clarified butter and oil and add sugar.
  7. Add the Indian gooseberry paste and cook on a slow flame, till all the moisture in the mixture evaporates. Add the mixed powders to it and mix well.
  8. Switch off the flame and let the mixture cool completely and add the organic honey. Mix thoroughly.
  9. Transfer the prepared mixture into a sterilized and dry glass bottle.
  10. Consume as and when required.

Why homemade Chyawanprash is better than ready-made Chyawanprash:

  • Ready-made Chyawanprash contains a lot of sugar content which can be replaced in a homemade Chyawanprash and balance the amount of sugar or replace with the better option like jaggery, honey or stevia for sweet taste which is best for consumption by diabetics.
  • Ready-made Chyawanprash consist of preservatives mainly Potassium Sorbate and its long-term consumption may lead to nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. So it’s better to have homemade Chyawanprash which does not contain this kind of preservatives.     

The primary benefits of chyawanprash are to boost the immune system and to support the body’s natural ability to produce red blood cells. It is known to be good for the lungs because it nourishes the mucous membranes and further helps to keep the respiratory tracts clear. It is used as a tonic in winters, for further improving natural resistance and lends strength and energy to the body.

It is advised to consume Chyawanprash in winters only, as the herbs added to this tonic are known to produce heat in the body; so this winter season have a spoon of wonderful homemade Chyawanprash to improve your family’s health in a much better way.
