TRIKATU CHURN: A COMBINATION OF HEALTHY HERBS
Ayurveda which is a 5000 years old branch of medical science is an encyclopedia of healthy herbs and their formulations. Most of these herbs work on the principle of “Prevention is better than the cure”. This is the reason they can be added to our daily routine and also can be used as medicines. One of these therapeutic herbal combinations is trikatu churn.
As the name suggests trikatu is made of two words Tri + katu where Tri is three and katu is pungent. So it is a combination of three aromatic herbs which are Pippali, Marich, and Shunthi. It is made by mixing three herbs in equal quantities-
- Pippali or Long pepper (Piper Longum L)
- Black Pepper (Piper Nigrum L)
- Dry Ginger or Shunthi(Zingiber Officinalis)
Trikatu has been used in Indian households for many generations as a medicine and also as Vedique Nutrition. It has multiple uses if taken in the required amount either in the morning or at night.
- It acts as a detoxificant if taken at night. The toxins that have accumulated in the body the whole day due to mental and physical stress can be removed by taking trikatu 30 min before going to sleep.
- It stimulates the liver cells to produce healthy enzymes and function actively to prevent liver diseases. This way it protects the liver from getting liver cirrhosis, fatty liver, and alcoholic liver and helps to filter the waste out of the body.
- It is carminative by nature and so plays a significant role in improving gut health and issues related to digestion. It enkindles the digestive fire (jatharagni) which if low will make the digestion process sluggish and increase the quantity of undigested food(AMA) in the body which can lead to the beginning of Vikriti(disease process).
- It is an immunity booster as the ingredients have a rich supply of antioxidants and vitamin C. It helps the body cells to fight against the free radicals and thus prevents any kind of bacterial or viral invasion into the body. Any kind of acute infection like cold, cough, fever, sinusitis, etc can be prevented by taking trikatu.
- Obesity is a universal disease mainly caused when metabolism slows down, leading to fat cell accumulation in the body. Trikatu being pungent and ushna virya (hot potency) by nature helps to shed extra fat and cellulite.
- The herbs that make trikatu are anti-inflammatory by nature, so they act as a blood purifier. This is the reason it helps to improve skin health and can be taken in skin diseases like acne, pigmentation, eczema, etc.
- Trikatu is anti-inflammatory by nature so can work wonders for diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. Due to the Ama formation in the joint spaces, the natural fluid is replaced by the toxic fluid causing pains and stiffness of joints. Trikatu helps to suppress that inflammation and inhibits bone/joint erosion.
How to use – Trikatu Churn
- 1/2 tsp of Trikatu powder can be taken at night with half glass of lukewarm water 30 min before going to sleep for detoxification
- For other indications, ½ tsp can be taken after meals with a glass of warm water once a day
- If it tastes bitter then it can be taken as -½ tsp trikatu with ½ tsp honey once a day after meals
- If it tastes too spicy then ½ tsp can be added to the food and consumed along with it
Contraindicated for:
- Lactating and pregnant mothers must not consume Trikatu churn
- If someone is taking anti-diabetic or anti-lipogenic medicines then they should not take trikatu
- People suffering from hyperacidity and ulcers are not allowed
- Most importantly, it should only be taken according to the dose suggested. Overconsumption can cause serious health hazards.
