Your Diet Can be the Cause of Your Body Odour

Body odour is largely determined by the genetics and personal hygiene but food also plays a role in determining the body odour.

There are certain foods that add to the body odour, some of them are:

  • Sulphur containing foods: Foods that are rich in sulphur like cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, gives a pungent smell to the sweat.
  • Meats: They produce a lot of acid in the body which adds to the smell.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol gets converted to acetic acid in the liver and gives a pungent smell to the sweat.
  • Spices: According to research, spices have such a strong effect on odour that a mother’s prenatal diet may affect the smell of the sweat of the newborn.
  • Fish: People suffering from trimethylaminuria are unable to break down the compound trimethylamine present in fish and end up smelling of fish due to the build-up of trimethylamine.
  • Caffeine: Too much coffee can affect the smell of your sweat as it creates a lot of acid in the body.
  • Dairy: Due to the presence of lactose in the breakdown of dairy, it attracts bacteria which can change the odour of the body.

Following are the foods that help in reducing body odour:

  • Tomato: They contain natural antiseptic and antibacterial properties that help to control the odour.
  • Coconut oil: It contains antimicrobial properties.
  • Wheatgrass: The chlorophyll content in wheatgrass has a counteractive effect n body odour.
  • Green tea: Due to its high antioxidant content it is known to reduce stink in sweat.
  • Lemon: It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which are known to remove even the most pungent sweat smell
